Seven Ways...

to get great Mexican food in the South Bay

Mexican food is like a religion to many of us. I wouldn't divine to sway any epicures as to what is the most esculent dogma out there. Please note: this is not "The Best Of" or a "Top Seven" list by any means. Every person, from all neighborhoods has his or her fancied joint for food inspired by our southern neighbors. From the Manteca-fueled gut bomb, to the elegant and esoteric, the South Bay has a Mexican style for everyone. This list is my way of presenting you with a broad spectrum from which to wangle some delightful victuals in our corner of the world.

  1. Mariscos Tijuana - This Hawthorne eatery, just on the western border of Bodger Park, boasts some of the best seafood cocktails, especially the pulpo (octopus) around. The mariachi thumps from huge speakers on the weekends. Don't forget to bring your cash. They don't take the plastic. Mariscos Tijuana no. 2, 15041 Prairie Ave, Hawthorne

  2. Panchos - A Manhattan Beach landmark that harks to the era of the Second World War, Pancho's is legendary. Not only is this a great place for grub; it is also a hot night spot for would-be carousers. Don't let them tell you it's in North Manhattan. It's not. It's in El Porto. Pancho's, 3615 Highland Ave, Manhattan Beach, www.panchosrestaurant.com

  3. Sion's - If you can resist a run for the border, this Taco Bell adjacent restaurant is an oft overlooked option simply because it's difficult to spot. If you're zooming south in a Range Rover down Sepulveda, you're probably texting and will miss it. Your loss. Sion's Mexican Restaurant, 235 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Manhattan Beach, Sion's on Facebook

  4. Palmilla Cocina Y Tequila - Specializing in fruits of the sea, as well as their wood-fired grilled fare, Palmilla is an upscale option with a hopping ambience. Great unique cocktail menu, and a must for any Mexican joint: excellent tortillas. Palmilla Cocina Y Tequila, 39 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach, www.palmillarestaurant.com

  5. Ensenada Surf N Turf Grill - Patrons wind themselves around this taco stand in Lawndale, queueing for authentic Baja-style fish tacos, mariscos, burritos and ceviche. They offer $1 fish tacos on Wednesday. Better get there early. Damn early. Ensenada Surf N Turf Grill, 4749 Artesia Blvd., Lawndale, bajacaliforniafishtacos.com

  6. Sausal - For something a little creative and different, try El Segundo's own Oaxacan-inspired restaurant. I'm a tremendous fan of the mole, but the chopped salad is my go-to for at least three lunches a week. Great evening bar scene. Sausal, 219 Main St., El Segundo, http://sausal.com/

  7. Riviera - For me, one of the easiest selections for this list. Great service, great menu, great drinks, in a great location. If you haven't had the Works Burrito, then you are a shell of a person. Riviera Mexican Grill, 1615 S. PCH, Redondo Beach, http://rivmex.com/

* Bonus(es) - 1) The three "Els". No, not Ernie. El Tarasco, El Gringo, & El Burrito Jr. I would be remiss if I didn't give a mention to these three hangover cures. They are all just a little different, but a little bit the same, too, 2) Beach Mex...RIP, my old friend.
