You Know You're in El Segundo

Seven Ways

you know you're in El Segundo

  1. You’ve lost your wallet. Or at least someone has asked you that at one point or another. How many of you were queried if you had “misplaced your billfold” when naming your hometown to somebody for the first time? Thanks to the 90’s hip-hop ensemble A Tribe Called Quest, probably several. But, that’s not the only cultural reference in which you’ll find this sleepy, seaside town. Mentions in several sitcoms (Redd Foxx anyone?),  tributes in TV and feature film make this city more than meets the eye.

  2. You go to Homecoming. It’s not uncommon to see generations of alumni gathering at the scoreboard end of Hazeltine Field. It’s also not uncommon to see them at the Tavern for a toast after the game has ended. Remember when The Tavern  was the Keg?

  3. You carry ca$h. But not too much. In fact, just enough to pay for the best breakfast in the entire South Bay at Wendy’s Cafe. Why cash? They don’t accept the plastic. Don’t pass up on Chef Jose’s chicken fried steak. Also, tip your server.

  4. You’ve got the blues. No, not the boo hoo blues, but the Blue Latte blues from Blue Butterfly Cafe on Main Street. It’s a local institution. Bacon + cheddar scone, anyone?

  5. You plop your lawn chair in left field for High School baseball games. Baseball put El Segundo on the map. But, did you know the football team has several league titles, and the boys varsity soccer team is the 2018 Regional State Champion? Yes, I am a coach with the boys soccer team.

  6. You have a second home in Rec Park. Between the 4th of July fireworks, Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Frolic, and the myriad other events here, you can’t help but marvel at the most comprehensive park in the South Bay. Yes, they have cornhole “courts”.

  7. Cheers! Yes, everybody seemingly knows your name here, but that’s not why we raise a glass. Rob Croxall, former ESHS Baseball standout, creates some of the best beer in the world (yes, the world) at ESBC. His accolades will tell you so. Try the Mayberry, and you’ll never leave.

El Segundo Boasts its own, uncrowded beach that actually has decent shore fishing. - LAX - Yes you hear the planes (a lot), but it’s really easy for your buddy to drop you off for your red eye flight to Belarus. - There are at least 17 places (and counting)  to get Mexican food in town. Enough said.
